Kearns, long before being out of the closet was seen as a career move within the entertainment industry was the first Hollywood actor to do so in the mid-seventies amid a shocking amount homophobia. In 1991, he made TV history by declaring that he was HIV-positive on Entertainment Tonight. Then, in 1992, he appeared on ABC TV’s Life Goes On as an openly HIV-infected actor. He was the role of Cleve Jones on the HBO adaptation Randy Shilts’ And the Band played On. He also appeared in A Mother’s Prayer and It’s My Party, as well as a recurring role in Beverly Hills, 90210… a number of shows that featured HIV/AIDS.
