Robert Barisford Brown is an American singer, songwriter, rapper and dancer. Brown, along with his regular collaborator Teddy Riley, is considered the pioneer of the new jack swing: a mix of hip hop and R&B. Brown began his career in the R&B and pop groups New Edition, from his founding in 1981 until his departure from the group in December 1985. Beginning his solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with the second album Don ' t Be Cruel. All five singles topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts, including number one Grammy hits "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step." In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the film Ghostbusters II. In 1992, Brown married superstar singer Whitney Houston, with whom he later had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug problems and family disputes made it the food for tabloids.
