The Florida Panthers Executive Vice President & General Manager Dale Tallon announced on July 5, 2013 that they had reached an agreement with D Mike Mottau for a one-year, 2-way contract.
Mottau was sold to Brian Rolston by the Boston Bruins for Yannick Riendeau, Marc Cantin and Marc Cantin on February 27, 2012.
Mottau signed a professional deal with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) on December 7, 2012, after his chances of signing a NHL contract were scuttled by the NHL lockout. Mottau had 7 assists in 16 games. He was then released by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of the lockout and signed a one-year contract on January 13 2013.
On August 19, 2014, Mottau announced his retirement.
